Trail Description: Episcopo- Franklins Ridge- Aztec Cave loop
The route begins at the Aztec Cave Trailhead. Instead of heading toward the cave, we take the left fork, climbing steadily toward the first overlook—a vantage point nearly level with the cave itself. From there, the trail transitions into technical terrain as we move straight up through a rugged section of rock spires. This stretch requires sure footing, solid handholds, and steady nerves, as we navigate sharp inclines and exposed rock faces.
Once we clear the spires, we push up to the main ridge and turn right, following it for roughly one mile of dynamic ridge hiking with sweeping views of the valley below. The terrain along this ridge is uneven and narrow in sections, offering both challenge and reward. The descent begins with a rope-assisted downclimb, leading to the upper section of the Aztec Cave.
From there, we continue the descent until we reconnect with the main trail and finish at the trailhead.
This strenuous hike combines steep ascents, rock scrambling, and rope work, perfect for mid-level to experienced hikers looking to push their limits and experience one of the most exhilarating off-trail adventures in the Franklins.

The Borderland Mountain Bike Association teamed up with WeHike Adventure to clear our North Hills trails of a number of blue spray painted arrows.
A special thanks to all participants and volunteers for their commitment, taking on this sprawled out challenge in quickly rising temperatures.
Please remind your friends to practice leaving no trace and respect our trails and natural open spaces. It is never okay to paint rocks. Remember the use of our trails is a privilege, and not a right.
Thank you, Speedy's Pizza for the delicious lunch!
